Digital Citizens
What does it mean to be a good digital citizen?
Joe,
Yes, mismanage and abuse the right to use such materials.
Renee Shaffer
Being a good digital citizen impies awareness of what is or should be considered copyrighted material, and being resctful enough to not mismanage such materials
Jeffrey,
That is great that you can literally show them some of your own copyrighted examples!
Renee Shaffer
Students are encouraged to hand write their name, year of creation, and "Copyright" on any hand-rendered work they produce, including every page if on something like a storyboard. They are also advised to put a digital copyright and/or water mark on all virtual art.
I also take my students to the US Copyright Office website and show them how to fill out the forms to register a formal copyright with the government, how to submit work + fees, and how to look up their copyright on the site, if needed as proof on an infringement claim.
It's also been helpful to show them some of my personal Copyright and Trademark forms, both in print and on line, and as examples, tell them of my personal experiences with each form of protection by walking them through the process.
Jeffrey,
Yes, on EVERYTHING. How do you tell them to do that?
Renee Shaffer
I find it neccesary to explain to some students what an "orphaned" work is, as inexperienced students mistakenly believe that if a copyright is not attached to a Google image search result, then it must not be copyrighted. Students are also encouraged to get into the habit of putting their copyright on EVERYTHING they produce.
Andrew,
I love the statement that instructors need to model proper procedure. This helps students learn and become good stewards of knowledge and become information literate.
Renee Shaffer
Renee, without a doubt this means we need to as instructors model proper and legal copyright handling both in the classroom, in our own developed materials and in assignment feedback in my opinion. Communicating what it means to exhibit ethical behavior in this area will mold more compliant students and faculty.
Arthur,
With your help, maybe we can make this happen- digital citizenry.
Renee Shaffer
It means that we give credit where credit is due, we are accountable for our written documents, and we are professionally ethical in our behaviors.
Being a good digital citizen means that you do not use other peoples digital content as your own. It is easy to access and take digital content off the Internet.
Karely,
Photocopies can be very problematic especially for for-profit institutions.
Renee Shaffer
A good Digital Citizen means knowing and applying the Copyright Laws for each type of material used, for example, is very common that students make a copy and paste of textual information without citing sources, that is plagiarism, therefore instructors should be to educate the students in the knowledge and application of laws.
Sometimes many instructors, librarians, and the other staff in the Universities don't know what is the laws of the copyright such as include for example the photocopies, and the students make a copies to all book.
To be a good digital citizen, you must be aware of, abide by and respect all applicable copyright laws concerning any digital media you wish to use. (Unless it is your own material).
Being a good digital citizen means being proactive as the course has discussed.
In sociology I teach that people should be able to "see the world as an outsider would." That applies here.
Imagine being a scholar and having those long, hard hours be minimized by someone who didn't care.
Asking in advance is being a good digital citizen.
Phil Lewis
Digital Citizens should be inspired by the influx of information but not use it as a shortcut or profit off of someone else's hard work and research. Digital citizenship goes side by side with understanding that if research and development are not protected, there will be no new innovation.
Tim,
It is so helpful to be able to spread the knowledge about copyright issues.
Renee Shaffer
Being an example to others who may not know the laws or even the professional etiquette of putting a lesson plan together or compiling information of a specific subject by using websites or copying directly from the internet without first gaining their permission.
Setting parameters for others while they gather information themselves so that they can understand the copyright laws.
I agree Tom:
Instructors are looked upon as role models and it is so important that it is a practice and not just words.
