Krista, I think the 3rd point is a good point to bring up. With all of the differents browsers, OS and combinations thereof, we really need to be mindful of this.
I think that it is critically important to look at the following things when determining what tools to use:
1. What level are the students at? Is the technology that I'm using easy for them to understand? If not, then you need to recalibrate what you are doing and the tools that you are using.
2. How often do we need to use technology? Is the environment synchronous or asynchronous? This will affect the types of technologies that you use?
3. What type of class is this for? Is this a programming or an English class? These are important questions to answer when determining the depth and amount of tools to use.
Steven ,
That is a great technique. I didn't know if you used "clicker technology" or Poll Anywhere. Thanks.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
The question asked was:
How do you work with polling? How do you use the technology to do these things?
My response:
When I open a live chat session I go to the available pods and create any polls that I might need. For example, I asked my class if they felt they were gaining anything from the class and I broke out the poll into percentages e.g.,
20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100%.
Fortunately 90% of the class said 100% so I asked what subject(s) were not clear and I made an effort to answer all questions.
Steven ,
How do you work with polling? How do you use the technology to do these things?
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
1. The ease of use when presenting course material.
2. Feedback from the students in the form of questions and polling.
3. A mixture of Power Points, use of the Internet and clear explanations on the whiteboard.
Brenda,
Great insight, frustration can really "kill" the learning process. Also, the frustration does affect the self-discipline and motivation. Good answer!
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
The first most important thing to consider is the ability of the student to use the technology tool chosen. If the student does not understand how to utilize the technology, they will not be able to effectively implement the virtual learning environment.
The second most important thing to consider is effectively changing the use of technology. Too much time for one method of implementation will cause the student to have decreased interest in the virtual technology chosen. Variety of technology methods is important.
The third most important thing to consider is whether or not the student is self-disciplined for the use of technology. Self-discipline or motivation in a virtual environment can be an issue in success with the technology tools.
Lauren,
Good insight. Many instructors start with a START area that does walk them through the framework of a course and explains the what, where, how of the course. It is also a way that introduce you as the instructor.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
The most important would be the students' capabilities. How knowledgeable are they with the Portal that they will be using? I think it is important for them to have some type of hands on training either in person or over the phone so they can ask questions. It would be unfoirtunate for a good student to do poorly in a class solely because of not understanding the system they are working with? Next would be what type of systems do they have; are they in their home or do they log on elsewhere (public place or work)? Making sure the students have access to the different technologies the instructor has provided. Things like can they download PDFs, what type of Word Processor do they have, can they access/download video footage or podcasts? Third would be time zone issues if the instructor creates a virtual classroom with synchronous activities. making sure everyone can participate, even if at different times. Also, finding ways for slower typers to keep up with discussions and chats, or those that may have learned English as a second language. Making sure they know what translation tools are avialable to check their work before posting.
Don ,
How do you work with a student that does not have a computer at home? How do you work with pacing? Interesting answer!
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Typically, I ask the question to the class as to if they have a computer at home. Some are fortunate enough to have this, others are not. I ask a series of follow up questions to assessing to see if everyone has a basic understanding of computer technology and hardware/software usage. It is apparent after the first assignment that requires the use of a browser and Microsoft products as to who may need some guidance in this area.
Mary,
How would you access a student's knowledge of computers?
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Accessability, time, and student's knowledge of computers.
Kimberly,
Amen! Organization is so important as well as consistency. That makes the technology tools more effective.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Shannon,
Great comments! You are correct. Also, you don't have to learn everything at once, take small steps.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
When using technology there are three things as a virtual student that I have personally deemed as important.
1. Organization of on line technology and where to find it.
Some on line environments are disorganized and confusing.
2. Clear step by step directions for use.
Some students may not be familar with the use of a certain tool and step by step directions allow them success in implementing them.
3. A clear rubric for grading in conjunction with technology and tool use.
If an instructor wants a specific tool used it should be clearly stated in the rubric as portion of the grade not left to student choice and docked points.
1. The instructor should be familiar with the technology and extremely comfortable with it. Students are impacted when the instructor is not comfortable with the technology.
2. Choose something that is going to have impact at the stage of learning. I generally advance my technology applications as the course progresses.
3. Choose something that enhances the learning experience. I see that clear communication was mentioned and this is critical. If the point is lost, it has not contributed to learning. Choosing the appropriate vehicle is necessary for this.
Rebecca,
Well said! It is true that it has to impart the knowledge.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Faryl,
Great answer! I find your comment regarding clear, concise information, so true.
