Maximizing Technology
Technology in the online classroom is massively important in this age. Every instructor must consider the subject matter of the class, how best to instruct the students based on the subject matter using the appropriate technology, and MAXIMIZE the process based on the technology. Excellent tools are available, but at times, instructors can fail to make the most of what is available. The answer is not always finding another tool so much as it is to maximize what you already have at your disposal.
John,
You make a great point. Technology does allow instructors to create an environment that is "like" the real one without fear of messing up. That is a great way to develop a student's skill and confidence.

In teaching a networking class, virtualization empowers both the instructor and the student. For example, a real network would require that the network setup be erased for the next class. Instead, virtualization allows the students to pick up where they left off instead of starting from scratch.
Broderick,
You make a great points. Student tend to use the tool they are most familiar with. You may have to "push" them to try new ones.

Good information Aundrea.
I strongly believe that students need to be flexible enough to accept different types of technology in the online classroom.
I agree when you say that the answer is not always finding another tool, but to maximize what you already have. Having all the resources available does not mean that students will take advantage of all of them.
However, there are times that students need innovation in order to pay more attention or just to motivate them in the learning process.
Aundrea,
What great points! You are right. I see instructors often look for a new tool when a familiar tool will work and students are comfortable with that new tool. I always tell instructors "check to see if the LMS will do it first".
