2 Teaching Patterns

The 2 most effective teaching patterns would be communication and question and answer.

Communication done well will enable students to grasp the course content and their expectations. Questions and answers will allow students to reach out to the instructor, form an academic relationship with them, enhance their understanding, and feel a part of the virtual impersonal classroom.

Elke,

I really hold students to a rigid communication style in most of my discussion board particularly if I am teaching a writing course. I do articulate those expectations in my syllabi and in my grading rubric.

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

I are right, Communication is so essential and necessary otherwiese your discussion board is useless!

Alejandro,

Interesting! I also try to use humor also. It is not always effective in the online course but I still try. I also think routine is an effective tool.

In my math class, I find that students in their subtle and not-so-subtle ways tell me whether they want a type one or two type two teacher. I try to give them options but some of them don't want options. They want to be told exactly what to do and how to do it. It is my duty to get them on their own and on their way ASAP but, it is not always possible to achieve this with everyone. Thank you for this entertaining post.

Yaw,

That is true. This irony is they don't always make the effort. They want the emails but won't reciprocate. This to me is frustrating.

Michael,

WOW! I love this! Which makes students the most uncomfortable? Being uncomfortable is not always a bad thing.

Tena:

what makes it so true is the fact that online students already feel isolated by virtue of the model.
So, without engaging the students with the various communication methods, the isolation gets worse.

I have always found three diffetent Teaching Patterns. And I use a school bus to ilistrate this.
1st Teacher (Bus Driver) says sit in this seat.
2nd Teacher (Bus Driver) says sit where you want.
3rd Teacher (Bus Driver) throws the keys and says you get the bus:)

Steven,.

How true! What different ways do you communicate?

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

communication is the key.... for them to see or feel what we want to expand to them. It also keeps every one intrested in the funciton of the class enviroment.

Arvice,

You are right. Communication is so essential in any classroom, but especially the online classroom.

Communication is the key to getting our students to understand what we as instructors are teaching them. Open communication keeps the class room in a great environment.
