Teaching pattern

Do you find it helpful to change your teaching pattern based on the type of students you have in a particular class?

Lyn,

What a great observation! Yes, even online classes have certain personalities and you have to be able to use that as a way to develop community!

Agreed! I, too have found that communication within the course may need a slight adjustment depending on the 'personality of the group'. Once I make adjustments based on the needs of each group, we have a much easier time getting through the course material.

Sandra,

Great post. You are right, you need to be aware of different learning styles but I don't think we have to be held hostage to it. My fear now is students use this as a crutch in their learning process.

Hello again, Keisha,
I try to be attuned to the learning styles of each of my students. I have done this in real time classrooms as well as virtual ones.
While it may not change my pattern of teaching it does require me to tailor my questions and comments in such a way that different learning styles feel comfortable participating.
While there are visual learners and verbal learners as well as reading/writing learners, I find that most adult students tend to be kinesthetic learners. They respond to activities directed at the other types of learner but they also need to be creative, hands on, work with study buddies, as well as use sounds and movement to 'hold onto' what they learn.

Keisha,

I may change parts of the course communication as it may fit one class better than others. Just as in a f2f course online courses have their own personalities.
