William,
What does this mean regarding establishing a teaching pattern. They are environments or delivery methods not teaching.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
The two most important things to consider is your course content, and time. I would also include the assignment and how much time you will need to assist or teach the topic.
Synchronism and Asynchronism.
Paula,
Great strategies! Coaching is a great way to describe how we interact with students. Feedback is so important and coaches do that in a variety of ways.
Simone,
True, It is so important that you develop that sense of community and students have to use technology to do that. I am amazed at the students who just won't use the the technology but want to learn online. I am somewhat confused regarding their expectations. . . .
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
I believe the two most important things to consider are to 1) communication - to clearly communicate your instructions and expectations regarding the course content and submissions 2)coaching/mentoring - letting the student know that you are there to help them (something the student may lose sight of in an online environment). Another that I would like to add is to always provide feedback to the student.
When establishing a pattern of teaching, I personally believe that the two most important things to consider are the level of my students, in terms of "where they are coming from". Some are new to the virtual environment and might struggle initially - I strive to help them be as comfortable and confident as possible while they develop a sense of community with other students and myself. While technology has its obvious advantages, not all come to the virtual learning experience with the same levels of technology savvy and confidence. I also believe that consistency on the part of the Instructor is key.
Philip,
You are right, and they will call you on it. I actually have them tell me what I should expect from them ( I also list those expectations in the syllabus) and I tell students what they can expect from me. They will hold you to it!
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Clarity and consistency.
Clarity of expectations, grades, and all aspects of the class and then consistent following them. Failing to do something you are supposed to leads to students happy with an inch attempting to take a mile.
Charlotte,
You are so right, and you may have to repeat this information multiple times in multiple ways.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
When establishing a teaching pattern, it is important to clearly state the expectations that I have for my students. I also clearly explain how I will assess each of the students.
Sodang,
True, and they should mirror each other.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
An established Pattern of teaching should emphasize strongly on course objectives and assignments should be clearly defined
Donald,
I am not sure that all students will think an instructor is fabulous by doing all of this. Our students see themselves as consumers instead of products and they want your three choice to only regarding them. I do agree with those three choices. I don't believe in zero tolerance as it disregards looking at an individual student holistically. I also believe in accountability in the students and holding them to it.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
In my opinion, the important things to consider are:
1. Fairness and Consistency
2. Justice with Mercy
3. Understanding and Appreciation
People respect fairness and consistency. People respect justice tempered with mercy. People want to be understood and appreciated (or validated). If an instructor can do all of these things, then what they do will indeed be great in the eyes and minds of their students.
Jenny ,
I agree with you. You have to be clear and consistent with your expectation and hold student to those expectations.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
The two most important items to consider when establishing a pattern of teaching is clarity in expectations in both assignments and class participation along with a visible engaged instructor.
Adib,
True, do you think course design plays a role in all of this?
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
The learning outcomes and the how you will deliver the content to your students
Adib Shakir
hyram,
You are right, there should be a coordinated strategy to cover and assess the objectives.
