meeting the class

Make a good first impression

Tiffany,

Great point! I also think they need to know that we know what the real world is like.

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

I think the students like hearing our background as this gives them insight to how much you really know. It also lets them know that their is employment at the end of the tunnel because we had a job in that field.

Wenda,

I have used the build a story game. Where I start the story and the student each have to add to the story by giving information about themselves. I usually say something that will "get their attention" first. I also will post a provocative article and ask them about their feelings and they have to say why. I have an article that is guidelines for hiring and supervising women in 1930. This always gets them talking. I find they will read this to their mothers, wives, grandmothers. . . that is how we start.

Amir,

So do I. I also create a button (I am a BB user) that says START HERE FIRST!

Debra,

I do too. Since I use humor in my f2f course, I tend to use that in my posts online. (when appropriate)

Good impressions are important. I share my background information as well. But does anyone have good ways to help the students get to know each other better?

In my f2f classes, I can play the name game. The first person says their name and something about themselves. Then every person after them has to say the names of the people who spoke before them. It ends with me saying all their names. I used to have each student stand and say their name (give their major, how many years at the school & their career goals).

However, at my university, live chats aren't mandatory (students can view the archive when they have time). How can I help foster student to student relationships?

I start my Announcement Page with a Welcome memo to the students. Here, I share with the main highlights of the class layout and about myself. In addition, on the first day of class I send an e-mail to the students welcoming them and attaching my Class Expectations.

I share a bit about my background and my experience in the field. They seem to have a certain amount of respect if they hear of your expertise. I let them know I am interested in getting to know them. It is important to be clear and concise about expectations from the beginning.

Howard,

yes, do you use a "start here" button?

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

A nice welcome letter and a video of the instructor will help too.

Steven,

I think it is important to share your experience particularly your expertise in the content area.

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

I always try to give my back ground in the subject that I am teaching at the time. I feel that in doing this I can get the attention and the respect of my students because of my natural and real experances.

Arvice,

Organization and communication are essential elements. And, as you indicated, being thorough so that the students achieve the learning outcomes. Nice job.

The first impression tells the class as a whole alot about their instructors. It's so important to be organize and thorough.

Ana,

Good! Do you think it is important to be a person not just a voice in the machine.

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

give a brief about your self and expirience and give the students a warm welcome
