Feedback

The course indicated that feedback is the most essential skill for an online instructor. I have found over the years that feedback should be made within 48 hours after the end of the grading week. What is you policy on when you provide this feedback?? My policy is within 48 hours.

Dale,

Great Strategy. Do you post this information in your syllabus or in the LMS?

Rosalind,

Great post! Good feedback gives comments on what is wrong and what is right. Students need both to learn.

Fred,
For grading assignments, I usually follow the 48 hour rule. For questions about assignments, I respond within 24 hours.

Hello Fred,

The current policy for our school is feedback is given when grading the assignment. We praise the student for something even if the grade is not passing. We provide suggestions on ways to improve their grade, where appropriate while keeping the tone positive.

Ramonica,

I agree with that and if you can't you let them know. I do have a different policy on the weekend. You also want to be able to control your workload.

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

I normally try to respond within 24 hours with feedback. I feel that prompt feedback shows that you as the instructor cares about the student personally rather than making them feel like another computer screen. This in turn can help with the positive success of the student.

Frances,

Time is the key. Students have to have feedback to gauge their learning. No feedback causes isolation

Fred,

As you note, feedback is essential and it should be timely. If a student submits an assignment and then has completed the next assignment before getting feedback, then it may be ignored completely. For the online school where I teach, feedback must be done by Wednesday for an assignment turned in the previous Sunday. I try to take even less time but give quality feedback.

Terry,

You are so smart to do that. This should be a part of your student expectations. You have a right to manage workload.

Hello Fred Kellenberger,
I have a similar policy. I provide feedback to students within 24 to 48 hours. The timeframe depends upon the day of the week (week day versus weekend), and the type of provided feedback (email, discussion, or assignment).

Terry Stanley

Fred,

I provide (and encourage others) to have a response policy in their syllabus. Typically, my response policy states that I will answer a question within 24 hours during the week and 48 hours during the weekend. I also reserve the right to let students know if that I will not be able to meet that policy due to travel or other obligations.
