RE: facilitator
A good online facilitator allows the instructor to utilize many technology tools but no matter how many tools are used communication is the most important of them. Different techniques can be utilized but in the end the student needs to understand what they are required to do for a course and instructors need to understand what the student is submitting.
Charles,
Great post. We really want our instructional style to be student centered and student responsible. As a facilitator is the guide to learning.

A good facilitator is:
Non-judgmental
A good listener
Self-confident (don't forget you have to believe in yourself before you believe in others)
Flexible
Genuine
Hospitable
A good facilitator:
Uses humour (have fun and make it fun when possible)
Knows how to facilitate a person-centred plan.
Uses pacing to move the person-centred planning process along at a rate that works for the focus person and the circle of support.
Uses good listening skills
Uses team work to enhance the effectiveness of the person-centred planning process.
Resolves any conflict constructively
Fosters the self-determination of the focus person so the person centred plan is created by and with them and not for them.
zara,
You are right; and the communication should go both ways. Students need to know the importance of their communication.

I agree with you communication is the key to a successful online course for the student and the teacher. Well done on your post here!
karen,
True, You want to try to minimize the technology tools if possible. The frustration regarding all of the technology can be a barrier.
