Guide on the Side
I remember the first time that I heard this expression and thought how succinctly it stated the obvious direction of successful education. Guiding speaks to student interaction and involvement. Guiding id supported by technology - great combination.
Beverly,
I am with you!!!! I am trying not to say the word grade in the next academic year. I want to create an environment of evaluation which means students have to pay attention to feedback. I now make students look at my feedback tell me through a journal what are their strategies to improve based on my feedback. I use that information to grade oops, evaluate their next paper.

Evaluator would be a great role, but most students are more interested in GRADES...simply because most higher education is based on grades. Grades are important to get awards, get accepted into educational programs, and get promoted within a program. I think our best option as evaluator is to create evaluation methods that will guide learners to get good grades!
Stanley,
True, but we have to educate students about the role of feedback and how to use it.

Breezy,
These are great strategies. I think it is so important for many of us to tie the learning to the real world and case studies work so well.

I like the term evaluator, but students will see their "grade" posted by the university.
As an instructor you do want to provide your students with a good lecture and also with live interactions so to speak so that they can participate within live case work scenarios. I think that practice and being prepared is a great way that students can get exposed to certain things via classroom or work place environment.
Nancy ,
Interesting comment! Don't you think that since we are using the term "guide" that maybe we should change the term grading to evaluating? I am not a grader I am an evaluator. Thoughts?
