What did you find needed to be done differently?

When I first began teaching, it was on ground and I quickly became comfortable in a style that worked well for me. My retention was high, students were involved and humor was a big part of getting students past the fear of math. However, when I got online I quickly found humor does not work as well and needed to modify a style I had used for many years.

Has anyone else found a specific thing they needed to modify or remove, once they went to the online arena after teaching on ground?

I look forward to your responses.

Thanks!

Karen "kam" Maiorano

Patricia,

You are right, isn't it great that they can learn from your mistakes. It also makes you human.

I find when I share with students my professional failures as well as the successes it makes me appear to be more approachable to the students. It helps to know that some of the best lessons learned are the ones where you really blew it.

Karen,

I actually continue to humor but I do use it in small doses. I work to make myself human and I think that is the key. I do have a forum that is casual and open so we can all share ourselves. You will have to find a way to create your online persona. My joke is that I am a six foot blonde online. (FYI, I am not!).
