Effective on-line instruction needs multiple assessment tools. Not every student will be able to take a quiz and show what he/she has learned. I strive to give students multiple and varied opportunities to apply new knowledge and skills.
Dale,
I know that can be a challenge. Many institutions really hold to a strict design in both form and content. This means there may not be any changes in the assessment part. You could provide formative assessments that give students info regular learning checks.

Sarah,
I could not agree more with this. However many courses are already designed and the format can not be changed.
Mamie,
You are right. There are almost always more than one use of good student data. It should drive changes in delivery.

Sara,
I agree. I have students that absolutely panic over a test but if I give them an assignment that involves certain processes they master it beautifully. It does wonders for the student's confidence in the content.

Sarah,
Agreed. There is such value in having multiple assessments using a variety of assessment tools. It provides the students with multiple opportunities to show their learning.

Yes, it's important to assess the content knowledge to ensure the student is comprehending the information or concepts. It also serves as a way for Instructors to improve their chosen delivery methods.

Sarah,
I think that's an excellent strategy. Students may be able to demonstrate content mastery in one manner more effectively than another.
