What do you see as one major issue between the two regarding content?

Kelly

I have not used Jing. I had to look it up on line to see what it is. I do have the Macromedia developement tools and I use Roxio creator professional for video development and screen captures. I am willing to try new things as long as they do not affect the security of my systems. Personnaly I have never engaged in Blogs or opened any twitter or facebook accounts mainly for personal and security reasons.
I think I am the only one left on the planet who does not own a cell phone or want one.

Have you tried Jing to record your comments?

Online learning and F2F learning pose different limitations and these limitations must be worked around. As a result, the structure of your online course may transform significantly from its F2F origin.

I teach in a technical environment and some things cannot be left to interpretation by reading the material alone. In the class room I am able to immediately supplement the information with visual aids and demonstration or a simplifying of the content. A student will say, I read this but I just don't undersatand it. In FTF comunication the issues can be resolved rather quickly. In an online situation the student may not be able to convey in an email exactly where he is having trouble.
The conversion to online would need to address these issues. I like to use acrobat reader for development it allows you to add notes to parts of the text that need enhancement. I also like to provide documents of frequently asked questions with solutions. In the classroom a student can hold an object of discussion in his hand and view its three dimensional form and better understand its workings than he/she can from a photograph. Special graphics, videos and animations will need to be created for the online environment.

How would you address this issue

Course content for the face to face student, would gernerally, contain some sort of demonstration. This is would be a problem for the online student, becauce they are at home in front of their computer's.

We hope! Do you think lifestyle plays a role?

Students who choose online courses usually choose it because they are comfortable with technology. They are usually more independent learners that just want a guide to learn and move through the content. F2F materials for them would be too stagnent and boring.

What changes in content is required?

Instructor should assist students using additional tools as streaming vieo, or audio tape, or textbooks, etc.

I hate to put more responsibility on the virtual campus, but I believe the first courses the student experiences online should be geared toward helping the student learn to take on the responsibility.

The instructors need to be able to facilitate and act in a teacher centered manner at the same time. New students are not confident enough to take on the responsibility that will be required of them to be successful and need the additional guidance from early instructors and advisors

You are correct about student responsibility in the online classroom. I am just not sure where they are learning that?

Content designed for a face-to-face course is based on the assumption the students and instructors will be working through the material in a synchronous environment. The instructor will be able to judge the students understanding of the material and be able to adjust in real time to areas of difficulty. The amount of engagement by the students can be easily determined through immediate observation.
The online environment does not permit the instructor to get the instant feedback from the student to determine the levels of understanding or participation. The students have to be provided encouragement and tools to effectively interact with the class in an environment that does not provide the instant feedback for questions and acknowledgment of a job well done. Elements have to be built into the course content to overcome the obstacles of a non synchronous environment where the students have to take on greater responsibilities to be successful and the instructor needs to be evaluating the success of the course content through postings, tasks, live chat discussions, course evaluations and communications with students/peers.

Online instruction is different than face to face instruction. Face to face communication can rely on non-verbal behavior. The non-verbal behavior can alert an instructor that the new concept being taught is created confusing and the instructor can ask questions concerning the confusing in real time. Non-verbal behavior is not available to assist the instructor in clarify concepts. An online course must be designed to provied opportunites for class feedback inorder to correct misunderstandings. An online instructor must not assume that the information provided is clear and concise. This is one reason that new course content should be designed for online courses.

I would take some short versions of the power point and incorporate many activities to engage the student. Then I might have an ongoing blog to reflect how the student puts such things as diversity in the classroom, conscious languaging and body language into play in their professional and personal lives.

to me i think video/powerpoint may not be an effective instructional method then face to face but i belive it can get put in online

How do you match new content with technology? What is your strategy?

modifying f2f content to fit modern technology through reassment and flexibility of material can be accomplished by enlisiting the right form of technology. An example might be keeping a chat or a blog going on subject matter that might be controversial allowing the student some immediate feedback, engagement and new insight.

Content should be the same, just delivery different in form.
We can use power points , dvd, also depends on the specifics of each subject and student group.
