feedback

What kind of feedback do you use with your online classes?

Taghreed,

Yes, depending on the content, objectives, etc. feedback may move from being more general to specific. Thanks.

Dr. Tena B. Crews

General and specific feedback is given. Based on the course objective and the rubrics given with the assignment, I would reply on what has been accomplished and what has not. I would add specific item for each student when he/she missed the question.

Jake,

I completely understand what you are saying. One thing I do is use a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) discussion board and students can list their questions there and anyone (students or instructor) can answer the questions. I give minimal extra credit for students answering completely and correctly. This helps with timely feedback.

I also use peer evaluation on projects in a formative setting. Students are to provide a draft of the report, project or whatever a week before the final due date. Then, I assign peers (anonymously) and they basically use the rubric provided and grade the draft and provide feedback. Students then have an opportunity to make their project better before I review it. I tend to get better projects that don't take as long to grade.

These have been helpful to me.

Do you have any strategies for giving individualized feedback in a timely manner when the class size is large? It seems like you can give individual feedback or timely feedback, but not easily do both.

Sarah,

It's always good to use a variety of feedback. I use formative feedback quite a bit to make sure student understand what they are doing at the time.

I also use self- and peer feedback. I always try to make the feedback individualized.
