Meaningful Feedback
When developing meaningful feedback for assignments/projects integrated into you’re my online course, the three most important things to remember?
1. The feedback should be addressing the rubric, what is intended to be learned in an assignment or task;
2. The feedback needs to be offered in a positive manner, encouraging students to learn from their mistakes and offer suggestions, illustrate how the performance can be improved; and
3. Offer suggestions on tips related to the assignment, if for example the assignment is a writing projects include suggestions that relate to deduction of points; grammar, lack of documentation of the paper, use of questionable sources, how t locate academic sources relevant to the assignment.
Kimberly and Marshall,
You are right on target with your comments. The rubric provides a framework for the feedback.
Keep up the good work.
Hi Marshall,
I agree with your reasons.
It is important that the feedback relates to the rubric. The students are able to read the requirements and what is expected on each assignment and when points are deducted, he or she is able to read and confirm what they did not do.
I always start my feedback with "Great Job/Good Job and what they did well. If I respond with "Good Attempt", I address postive aspects of what they did well and then discuss what was not addressed/missing.
I direct them back to the Essay example that I post in the "Course Question" thread at the beginning of class for an example on how to type a Cover page, essay formatting, and how to list a reference because some students do not know how to write an essay.
Wells & Marshall,
Thanks for continuing the conversation about feedback. I like the breakdown you have provided. Keep up the good work.
Marshall, I agree. You want to structure your feedback off the rubric and assignment requirements. I always try to break my feedback down into 3 parts: (1) Here's what was done well, (2) Here are the areas that resulted in lost points and why (3) How to best address these negatives going forward.
Marshall,
The rubric is the best for helping students understand the learning outcomes and how they connect with the assignment/project. Feedback through the rubric and through other means should be as you describe - meaningful, positive, encouraging, etc. to help the students improve. Thank you for your input.
