Nitin,
When we teach in a short timeframe, it is even more essential. Thanks for your input.
I think the three most important things to remember are:
1.) Feedback should be positive so that students do not feel discouraged and instead feel encouraged to learn from and use the feedback and to continue trying in the course.
2.) It should also be concrete so that students know specifically what is working well and can clearly identify what improvement should be made and how.
3.) The feedback should reference tools that students can use as they work on improvement. For example, instead of just suggesting that a student use better resources for an assignment the feedback might also identify specific resources to try such as a library database with resources on the topic or an instructor created guide to help students with improving on the resources in the assignment.

The three most important things are:
Timely and consistent feedback that enhances future learning.
Feedback that students can undertand.
Feedback should also provide examples in certain situations.
I think that the most important thing is not to remember, but to follow the rubric. If the rubric is clear and precise, this is a good thing, but it must also be very easy for the instructor to implement efficiently and effectively. Too many times, the rubric is quite detailed, but it is difficult to implement in practice given the time constraints imposed upon the faculty by the school. Grades that are due by such and such a date and time tend to encourage faculty to do short-cuts when implementing a detailed rubric. Most of the time it is because the technology of the virtual campus does facilitate the efficient implementation of a rubric.
When the rubric is not technologically implemented as an integral part of the virtual campus, this is a management problem because management is responsible for the creation and maintenance of the virtual campus. Unfortunately, many in management make the problem an instructor problem by holding the instructor accountable for something for which they have no control. In my opinion, this is a strategic error and a mistake. Fortunately, many virtual campuses are now implementing what is known as "clicking rubrics". This mechanism will effectively make the problem moot.

This topic has had a lot of responses which leads me to believe this is very important to all.
Meaningful feedback - is very important. If I didnt get meaningful feedback, I would either lose interest in the subject or not think highly of my instructors knowledge of the topic. In both cases it is no win for the student, which is not correct.
1 - Provide feedback that circles back to the requirements of the topic.
2- Be positive in tone of the feddback - this is important
3 - Timely feedback. If the feedback is too late, then there isnt much time to either fix or learn how to get better - esp in our 5 week sessions.
Jennifer ,
Good details in your post. This is helpful to others. Thanks.
Kimberly ,
Yes, the feedback should help the students improve. Keep up the good work.
1)Specific/detailed. I like to refer back to specific comments students made in their submission, and tie that into my feedback to demonstrate that I fully read their submission and noted what they had done well, and what might benefit from additional development. I also provide examples of what I would ideally like to see in their response, additional points for them to consider if they were to face this type of project in the workplace.
2)Timely- just as I expect students to post their work on time, they should hold me accountable for timely review and response. My goal is 24-36 hours.
3)Encouragement and reminder of real world application: Even when I see deficiency in student work, it is important that I offer positive feedback and encouragement to show I recognize what they have to offer and that I have faith in them. Also, students benefit from seeing the real world application of these assignments so I include references to that in my feedback as well.
Constructive feedback with detail assessment is essential in any form of learning - online or traditional classroom - So the students can extend and develop as they move forward in the class.
Madhuchanda,
Right on. You got all of the "T" words in your post: timely, tone and tie in. Excellent. Thanks for your input.
Darakshan,
Consistency is essential and encouraging students to improve. Feedback should be called "feed forward." ;-)
Thanks!
corinne,
I think you may have provided this information twice or else my post back to you didn't post. But, you are right on target with your comments.
Steven,
Yes, timely, positive and tied to the objectives. You'll have to include some constructive criticism as well. Nice job.
corinne,
The connection you make between the feedback and improved learning is so important. Nice job.
Frances,
You are right on target with your comments about feedback. Your last sentence in particular strikes me as very important. That is why timely feedback is so important. Thank you.
Patrice,
The connection you make early in the course with the students is essential. This can occur though feedback and helps them feel more like an individual and not a number in an online course. Good job.
Here are my 3 important things to remember.
1) Timely and positive feedback.
2) Tone of the feedback should not be intimidating. Acknowledge the effort put into the assignment.
3) Tie in the grading rubric. Clearly show where and why points were deducted.
The three most important things are:
1. Always be positive and encourage students to perform better.
2. Provide references to review the material where the students lost points.
3. Be consistent with the grading.
When developing meaningful feedback for assignments/projects integrated into your own online course, what do you believe are the three most important things to remember?
1. Formal feedback is typically provided in conjunction with a rubric and more detailed, lengthy feedback is developed and feedback must be provided to students to improve learning
2. meaningful feedback supplements and reinforces the learning process
3. specific, detailed feedback is more effective and helpful for students
The three most important things to remember when developing meaningful feedback are:
1) Be timely
2) Be positive
3) The feedback should be tied to the objectives
