Developing Meaningful Feedback
I am a firm believer that feedback should start with a praise and then to constructive criticism with a positive tone. Negativity only breeds contempt with the learning community and then resentment. From an instructor's point of view, there is tremendous gratification when the student accepts the feedback and use it to elevate themselves. I really think it is important to keep the assessment process positive and fair.
Carlos,
Hmm. I don't see why it would limit instructors or feedback. Can you elaborate?
We use the sandwich approach at my institution and I'm not too fond of it. It limits instructors, and it limits feedback. You cannot focus on the entire feedback the student needs to receive.
Neer,
Yes, this is the sandwich approach. Think about the positive comments and praise as the bread of the sandwich and the constructive criticism as the meat. You are right in target with your comments. Thanks.
