Rubric
Hello
Using a rubric for assessment not only helps the student stay focused and on track but it also helps the instructor to do the same. I always post my rubric on the class Announcement Board usually one week prior to the due date of the assignment. Not only does this give the student a clear road map as to what is expected but it also reduces confusion and countless angst on the student’s part trying to figure out what it is that I am looking for.

Jennifer,
Yeah! I'm glad you love them. When you first discover something so powerful, it really impacts your teaching and your students' learning. Keep learning!
I'm new to the Rubric world and I must say that I LOVE IT! It helps me to be consistent when sometimes the content of the assignment can be a bit inconsistent from student to student. I have also found that students really appreciate it and feel confident their work has been viewed and graded fairly. That of course gains the students confidence and helps them to be more successful!
Michael and Bill,
Nice job of continuing the conversation. It would work in online courses as well. I hope the "university-generated rubrics" measure your projects/assignments well. Thanks!
I often do the same, Bill, to provide students with such a road map.
I only wanted to add onto your post by making a suggestion for you to try when you have the opportunity. Many times at the beginning of an English Composition course, I will take time to have the entire class make a syllabus for the first essay. When students can participate in the process of adding and weighting items to the assessment, they have an even clearer understanding of expectations. While I have not attempted it in an online course (due to university-generated rubrics), I have had great success in face-to-face classes and assume the results would be as positive online if the opportunity existed.

William,
Love your use of the words "clear road map." It's exactly what the rubric should be. And, this applies to both students and instructors. Thanks!
