Rubric Presentation

Having used rubrics that are issued and used in each marking period I agree that they must be presented well. A student can have seen the same rubric all marking period and still not understand how they earned the grade issued.

Michael,

Definitely. I "front load" everything so that when students log in the first day, they have everything they need for the whole class. They can then look ahead too. Thanks!

Yes, students need to be made aware of the rubric. Considering students take different classes throughout there collegiate career, the rubrics for assignments within the courses will differ. So, given the variance of rubrics, it would be necessary to review the rubrics and possibly reiterate the access to the rubrics for the assignments throughout a single course.

Tyra and Heather,

Thanks for continuing the conversation. When students pay attention to the rubrics and criteria, they more fully understand the expectations. Thanks!

Hi Heather,

I also have found this to be the case in classes. I often email the rubrics with a highlight of the assignment objectives. The students often then take time to more carefully review the rubrics. I also try to review them during live chat or seminar times. This way I am exemplifying how to use rubrics for an assignment.

David,

So true. The LMS we use does allow for the rubrics to be integrated with the assignment. The students can review the rubric before the assignment and see the instructor's rating and comments easily after the assignment. It is SO beneficial!

Heather,

Rubrics are also beneficial when they are integrated into the gradebook. It makes it easier to display for the student and it gives them your expectations in a very observable place.

Heather,

If you are given a rubric and are not involved in the development of the rubric, please make sure they are measuring exactly what you need it to measure. Thanks!
