Peer Review and Assessment

Hello All,

I have found over the years that peer editing and assessments have been valuable tools in the learning process. Once students get over their initial reluctance, I have found that they are often more critical than I am with each others' work product. That being said, when they get their own work back, they often have a better feel for where they need to improve, not only because they got their corrected work back, but also because they know what errors to avoid. It has been both a challenge and a thrill to see the students go through the peer assessment process.

Mamie and Scott,

Thanks for continuing the conversation about peer assessment and using rubrics. I agree. Students do need to learn to provide constructive feedback to others.

Hello Scott,
I think Peer assessment is a very valuable tool when used with a rubric. Many times student learn best when assessed by their peers. Allowing students to use a grading rubric or some type of assessment with guidelines allows all student participants to be interactive in the learning process.

Suzanne and Scott,

Whenever I do peer feedback, it's always anonymous and they use the same rubric that I will use for the final evaluation. It works for me and my students. They need to learn how to provide good and constructive criticism.

Scott:

Peer assessment can be a minefield, in my opinion. Without clear guidelines and good mentorship, it can be used for personal recriminations. The grading on a group project should be comprised of both instructor assessment and peer evaluations so that it is unbiased and accurate.

Suzanne

Scott,

I love using peer- and self-evaluation using the rubric which I will use to assess them as well. It gives students an opportunity to get feedback before the final project is due and learn how to provide constructive criticism to other. Nice job.
