Online Surveys
At the end of each course, we do online surveys. This gives our school idea of where we can improve.
Brian,
And, to be able to express those concerns, they have to feel safe within the classroom community. Nice job.
I totally agree. The students need to feel their concerns are being addressed. They will all not be considered, but it feels good to express those concerns.
Rosalind,
Do you find you get a decent response from the students? Our college's goal is to get at least a 70% return and that's high. Just wondering what your institution gets on a response rate. Thanks!
Hello,
We too provide online surveys. This assesses the student's perception of the course, instructor and the school. As an instructor I use the feedback to make improvements in the course where and when applicable to increase the academic success of the students.
william,
Change is not always easy for everyone. We have to make sure we're all on the "same page" to move forward and we have to be willing to move forward. Thanks!
It gives an idea, but the people in charge have to also believe in the change. I have see great ideas come across and because the person in charge want it a certain way , nothing gets done.
Jim,
We do have to make the survey user friendly, but yet word it so that the feedback we get is usable. Thanks for your input.
To me - it depends on how the survey is worded. It seems like a balance between a survey that is easy to understand, is easy to do, and is very carefully constructed to get the best results. I've found it hard to get students to take the surveys because they often have another job so time is a premium and they have better things to do. Also - there is no obvious incentive for them.

Phyllis,
Good point. We do need to actually use the information we gather through the online surveys and take that into consideration while we continue the revision process. Thanks for your input in this forum.
I think online surveys are great provided that the information that you get from them gets used and is implemented in the course to improve them.
kathy,
That's a shame. Even negative feedback can help you improve the program and courses. The students could have some very insightful feedback. Just ask how to improve. . .do an end of course evaluation - it doesn't have to be a teacher evaluation, but course evaluation.
We do not do end of the course surveys. Our online curriculum is still in its infant stages and has lots of kinks that need to be worked out. Right now I think the feed back would be so negative. Our school also just moved to Ipads instead of hard books and that combined with the online learning has been very difficult for the students that i think they would bury us in a survey.
Jeremy,
Have you tried asking for student feedback in a formative setting prior to end of course evaluations? This has been a tremendous benefit in my classes and students then seem to add more on the final course evaluations.
Thanks!
We have these too, but I feel that there are not enough students who actually add a comment for whatever reason. I wish everyone would spend a few extra minutes to make sure they put great detailed feedback into the system.
PatJohn,
Do you do any formative assessment or just a summative course assessment?
Glad you use the summative course assessment to make changes. Thanks!
