Francis ,

I like your statement about the driver of what you are going to build. These are the learning objectives and you're right on target. Thanks!

ALWAYS! Thanks again for all your input and insight.

You need to consider:
1) What you want them to learn - This is the driver of what you are going to build.
2) How you want them to learn - There are so many different ways to drive the content you are delivering.
3)How you are going to assess learning - You need to determine how you are going to know whether or not they have learned what you have presented.

Karen,

These are key considerations. Thanks for bringing them up through this forum.

The three most important things to consider are: consistency, attention to detail and reliability.

Tuwaner,

Technology reliability is something that others have not discussed. Thanks for bringing this up. We have to have technology available and reliable for students so that they can develop that much needed learning community online. Thanks!

When authoring my online course, I believe the three most important things to consider are

1. Technology Reliability - What's the point if technology issues prevent students from seamlessly getting educated and causes frustration.

2. Privacy and Security - Students should feel safe enough to learn without being judged or stereotyped. They should feel secure enough to fail and try again until they learn without being branded or labeled.

3. Transferring successful f2f pedagogy into the online world. Online education is new, different and exciting. But, we don't need to start from nothing in utilizing it. We have past successes in teaching and learning that should be included in online teaching and learning. There is no need to throw the baby out with the bath water because we are doing something new and different.

Karen,

My pleasure. Hope you continue to take courses and keep learning.

Take care.

Donna,

When you say "vision," I'm assumed you meant the learning outcomes or course objectives. but then you noted the vision should outline the objectives, so I think I understand then that the vision would be the program goal? Thanks!

Thanks Dr. Tena! :-)

You must consider the vision of the course, the overall template or module and how to best deliver the course content. The vision should outline the objectives or competencies that the course will focus on and what learning outcomes should be obtained at the completion of the course.

Mamie,

The requirements/expectations must be clear and connected to the learning outcomes. Then, as you note, there are the assignments and rubrics used for assessment that should also be connected to the learning outcomes as well. Then, the students can understand why they are doing what they are doing. Thanks!

Karen,

You are not alone. More and more nowadays the institution develops the course and relies heavily on good instructors and technology to deliver the course. Thanks for your input. You have some great points.

The 3 things I think are important to consider when authoring my own course are:
1. Are the requirements for success clear and concise.
2.Are the modules and assignments written in a step by step process.
3. The grading rubric for each assignment is included.

I have never authored an online course, as all the schools I have worked for always have the courses set up. However I do not think it would differ much from a traditional classroom for two of the elements, which were identified in this chapter, and that would be to consider what you want your students to learn and what previous knowledge they may have of the subject. The third element, which I would consider important, would be method of delivery. When teaching math or first term, being online is actually tougher as students cannot see your body language that shows you are there to help. Creating online math and first term classes has this additional challenge, which I was able to work through in a face to face - but have yet to completely break through in online (as I did in F2F0.

Jacqueline,

You are right and there are so many things to think about. But, we have to think about them and move the students forward to help them achieve the learning outcomes. Nice job.

I believe the three things that are crucial in the online environment for students are What do I want the students to learn, How are the students going to learn the material, i.e. what tools will I use to deliver the course content, and How will I assess student learning. There are many facets to monitoring and authoring an online course for instructors but this is a great way for students to be able to complete their degree as long as there is ample communication between the instructor and the students.

laura,

And, all of these should be tied to the learning outcomes. We want the students to understand what they are working toward and why. Thanks!

Gregory,

Being able to apply the content to the real world is an excellent goal. We have to work to help students do this. Thanks!

The three most important things to consider in authoring an online course:

1. What do you want the students to know?

2. What are the best methods to deliver course content?

3. How will the students be assessed?
