Vimlarani,
Thanks for introducing SCORM to this discussion forum. We have so many things we need to consider when authoring and teaching online courses.
Choosing the Right Content-Authoring Tool For Your e-Learning Needs
Course-authoring tools can create online courses, while content-authoring tools create subject specific online content. Subject Specific Online Content more than likely has less features and functionality than an online course created with a course-authoring tool, but, this depends upon the software used to create the content. In the e-Learning industry, we generally use the two phrases interchangeably. Learning Management Systems (LMSs) are web-based software application platforms used to plan, implement, and assess learning processes related to online and offline training administration and performance management. LMSs provide an instructor a way in which to create and deliver content, monitor learners' participation, and assess student performance. LMSs also provide learners with interactive features, such as threaded discussions, web conferencing, discussion forums, and other methods of communication.
To accomplish these we need Sharable Courseware Object Reference Model (SCORM), which is a set of specifications that, when applied to course content, produces small, reusable e-Learning objects. It's important to consider the context in which course-authoring tools will be used. Dependent upon: Training Objectives & Delivery Methods online or blended, media needs, resources and ongoing support, interactivity, plugins, costs, etc. The course-authoring tool that best meets your needs will depend entirely upon your situation. In the long run, applying due diligence during the evaluation process will save you time and money.
Hani,
I am glad you included the quality issue. I don't known if you have heard of Quality Matters, but I am going to their conference this year and look forward to learning from them. Thanks for your input.
The three most important are to:
A) Improve student learning experiences.
B) Improve curriculum.
C) Impact quality assurance and benchmarking.
Hani,
Thanks for your opinion and input. We have to know where the students are coming from and where they need to go so that we can help get them there. Thanks!
Sure in addition to what Sue Kinney listed as " the three most important things to consider when authoring your own online course (in my opinion) are:
1. What do you expect students to be able to do?
2. What do you expect students to know?
3. How will students gain the necessary knowledge?"
I will add what kind of technology we used to authoring an online course? Is it available for every user?
Thanks
Hani Abu-Salem, PhD
Khaled,
The students' abilities and the LMSs' abilities are two key components. The better we know them both, the better we can develop the content and communication to help the students excel.
Thanks!
Marjorie,
Right on! If the students don't understand what is in the modules or how to access them, they will never achieve the course goals.
Thanks!
Deana,
Yes - you are on target with your list. Everything we do should help the students improve and achieve the learning outcomes. Thanks for your input in this forum.
Hello Tena,
There are many important things to consider. I would think these are the most important items:
(1) The level of students and their academic preparation
(2) The capabilities of the LMS and the availability of learning tools.
(3) How to map the course content to match the level of students using the LMS and available tools.
Khaled Elelithy
I want to make sure that the modules that I create will have the students learn the desired concepts.
I also want a consistency in language and delivery of the modules.
I want a clear explanation sent to the students of what they are expected to do.
When authoring an online course, one must consider the following:
1) What do you want students to know, understand and do?
2) How will students consistently gain knowledge in each module?
3) Testing measures within each module.
One must understand the LMS system and how each module can scaffold off the next in order for students to learn, apply learning, and be tested on that learning. :D
Phyllis,
Access and proper navigation to allow students to access the assignments, email, etc. is essential in helping their reach the learning outcomes. Thanks for sharing.
You want to determine what you want the students to do and learn and how will you assess what they have learned.
Phyllis
Nicole,
Great list. We do have to think about the students and the content and how we can provided a consistent framework for them to navigate easily. Thanks!
The three most important things to consider when creating an online course are:
1. What do I want the students to know or be able to do?
2. How is this content going to be delivered and received?
3. How are students going to be assessed?
It is important that these answers remain consistent throughout the development of the course. They will help to form a strong focal point and framework.
Jacinda,
Thanks for your input in this forum. You bring up some very good points about communication and helping students succeed. Nice job.
Jason,
Excellent. We do need to understand our students and take them from where they are to where they need to be. Connecting everything to the learning outcomes is key. Thanks!
Hi Tena and All!
When authoring my own online course,I think there are many things to consider. In my opinion, the three most important are:
1. Will the student understand the tasks involved in completing the course?
2. How will the student achieve the learning objectives?
3. Is the language used in the course design encouraging and engaging?
I feel that even in the online classroom, students should feel comfortable with instructors and willing to ask questions. Proper development of the online course will foster greater participation from students.
What techniques do you think should be incorporated into course design that would foster rapport between instructors and students?
Ruby,
This is perfect. Thank you.
Just keep in contact with the designers best you can. It is important that you are able to tweak rubrics and assignments, etc. as need be. Thanks again.
