Michael,
Step one is so important. Students must understand the expectations and how they will be assessed. And, you are right on target that we have to present the content in a variety of ways to hit all learning styles. Thanks for your input.
The three most important things to consider in authoring the online course are:
-Brief the students so they understand the expectations of the class from the beginning.
-Getting the students to understand the course content in such a way that it will be retained for exams and quizzes.
-Present the topics in such a way that the content can be attributed to daily functions and activities of the topic (example would be the court case on Terry Vs. Ohio for a pat down search of a subject who the police encounter on the street)
Mark,
The modules and the key concepts within the modules are essential. As you said, consistency is important as well. Thanks for your input.
I believe that the three most important considerations when authoring an online course are:
1) Making sure the modules teach the knowledge and skills intended (which should be in line with stated learning outcomes for the course).
2) The modules throughout the framework of the course should maintain consistency so that students are not confused by "non-verbal" cues or sudden differences in language.
3) Personality! The teacher must, must, must allow students the sense that their course facilitator is a human being who is looking out for them and accessible for questions and other concerns during the course.
Doing well in these three areas will definitely go a long way toward creating a solid and useful course for students!
Randolph,
You are on target. The technology must be available and easy to use. Everything must be connected to the learning outcomes - projects, assignments, etc. I'm assuming the time constraints you are discussing are connected to the length of the course.
Thanks!
Randolph,
the technology must be appropriate for the situation, easy to use and connected to the learning outcomes. I'm assuming the time constraints you are talking about are connected to the length of the course. Thanks!
In my opinion the three most important things to consider:
1. Available technology
2. Time constraints
3. Student focused learning outcomes
The three most important things to consider?

3. Student driven outcomes
Jack,
Ah - thank so much.
I have presented at the Midwest conference at HLC. Thanks again.

Joseph,
Good list! It is important to understand how students learn and recognize the importance of providing content in a variety of ways for all learners. Thanks for your input in this forum.
Jack,
And, HLC stands for? Those of us in various regions of the U.S. have different accrediting bodies.
Thanks for your input.
Hi Dr. Crews
The 3 things that I feela are important to consider are.
1. You have to reconize that not every student learns the same way some are visual learners some learn by doing and some are conventional learners and can read the books and understand the material.
2. Have well balanced material that will try and cover all the different learning styles.
3. Which ever ways you are teaching make it ingaging so the student wants to come back tomorrow and learn more.
We are accredited by HLC.
Jack,
Sounds like your institution is focused on objectives and that is awesome. It is good to keep them all in check. Thanks for your input.
Tena,
The courses we design must also be in compliance with degree objectives, specializations objectives, and have terminal course objectives
Jack,
You bring up good points. We do have to think about how to deliver the content to students and use learning objects effectively. Thanks for your input.
What do you want students to know and do
Have a learning object database
Have several modality deliveries
Maureen ,
Excellent. Connecting the learning objectives to the assignments/projects and helping the students understand what they are working toward is essential. As we all understand the expectations better, the more likely we can achieve the objectives. Thanks for your input.
Hi Tena and Class. I think the three most important elements to consider when authoring an online course are:
1. What are the student learning objectives;
2. How can I best convey the content to ensure that the students will meet the objectives;
3. To ensure the content is being met through fair, but challenging assessments.
I think when considering all of the above, the developer will be satisfied with the end result and, I believe the students will be very satisfied with what they have learned and how it was learned through a well-developed learning environment.
