Online Course Development

In course development it is important to ensure the course material is easily assessable. It is also important for the student to understand what is expected of them and how they will be expected to present the information that have received for grading or testing their knowledge of the content. With today’s technology the media is so extensive and there are so many options in developing content for online learning. It is always important to understand that there are a number of learning styles and it is important to cater to a combination of styles. Once the information is presented to a student; the framework is set; then a student can familiarize themselves with the structure and feel a level of comfort in navigating continued class material. The bottom line is if the student does not understand what to do; there is no progress.

Nicholas ,

You are right. Consistency is the big "C" word and there are various ways to provide consistency. Consistency in evaluation and communication are key areas. Thanks.

Consistency is EXTREMELY important, but I think that you also touch on a great cliche: there's more than one way to skin a cat". It's important to remember that there are many different types of learners out there and we need to keep ALL of them in mind while setting up these templates.

Richard,

Thanks for adding to the conversation. The "C" words in teaching online that are important are "consistency," "communication," and . . . I am sure there are others.

Julynn, you make some good points. I think the consistency is hugely important. Students adjust to a particular format and layout, and when a module differs from what they expect, that can throw the student off course. The assignment can be simple, but if it doesn't look the same as other modules, some students run into roablocks.

Julynn,

You bring up some very good points. Thanks for your insights on this topic. Communication is essential to make sure students understand the expectations, learning outcomes, and how to achieve those outcomes.

With the framework as you noted, students will benefit from the easy navigation and structure. I like your "bottom line."

Thanks!
