Online learning

Developing an online database is important as a resource to use during the course and saves time.

Lealan,

Yes, I to use my bookmarks quite a bit. It's a good way to organize and keep things handy. I have also used iGoogle (but hear it's going away) so now am using Protopage. It's nice too.

Hello,

I organize virtual files based on various resources so I can pull external resources in my class, organized around topics. I find that bookmarking websites help as well.

Lealan

Christopher,

Yes, once you get a good database set up, it's easier to grab things from the area and use them over and over again.

Thanks for your input.

I believe the online database will save time.. for me the issue would be to know how to retrieve the pieces of information stored in the databased for later use. If you use the database extensively the content will grow making retrieval more challenging unless you have good record keeping or a method for retireving the data placed in the database.

Craig,

Excellent. It is important to prepare so that you gave more time during the course for feedback, communication and assessment. Thanks.

I find that having an online database helps me maintain consistency from course to course when I teach the same course in different sessions. It keeps me on track and helps me make sure the students aren't missing key areas. It also helps save time in the development of the course in future sessions.

I find that I spend an enormous amount of time in the development of the online database. Sometimes colleagues don't see that time and only see the time I spend in using the resources. I often hear from colleagues who don't teach online courses that it must be really nice to be able to spend so little time in teaching the course.

Again, they don't see that the time spent is before the course starts and not during the course. The time teaching the course then shifts to grading and working with students. They tend to still spend development time during the session and see them self doing more work than I do in teaching. I see it as a organization issue. It still is something that must be dealt with, the perception of less time when one is highly organized and uses online databases of information.

Yes, saving time is always a great thing. I personally enjoy the online database because its information someone can always go back to and either use as a reference, or even be used as a teaching tool to show how information, science or data are always changing.

Gerry,

Any resource you can use over and over again is good. Just make sure it's up-to-date as well. It will save time.

Thanks!
