How the Course "Fits"
I believe it is important to consider how courses fit into the overall curriculum/program. Courses should not be taught in isolation and scaffolding happens not just within a course but obviously accross courses.
Sue,
Right on. You have to know how the courses work together to make up the curriculum. Thanks for bringing this up so we can think more about that. Thanks again.
We are currently dealing with this issue. Students sign up for one program and all components of that program need to complement each other and provide students with an understanding of what to expect in the industry.
When you develop curriculum without knowing all its components you do the students ... and your school ... a disservice.
Diane,
Your comment about scaffolding is true. When we can take what we have learned in one course and transfer that learning and then learn more - that rocks! Thanks for your input.
I have had the great oportunity to attend different courses within multiple schools. The one thing that benefitted me was the online courses were similiar with the format and all required similar things.Scaffolding is helpful across courses.
Joel,
Knowing how your course fits into the "big picture" is important. There are typically a series of courses that students take to learn the knowledge base as a whole. And, thanks for mentioning scaffolding across courses. Nice job.
