online discussions
Discussions are very important to the learning in an online environment. It is important to be very prompt and enthusiastic in our approach to discussion topics.
Paula,
We do have to think about how we assess students' posts and what we expect from our students. We have to clearly explain to them what are good posts and what are not good posts. I use a rubric and examples in the syllabus. Thanks for emphasizing how we, as instructors, need to challenge ourselves. Nice job.
Hi,
I too, have experienced the generic "I agree" or "me too." It forced me to think about how to better engage my students through postings. As a writer, I began to examine my choice of words, tone and even subtopics that could be introduced within the discussions in order to create more enthusiasm. It can be an ongoing challenge for instructors, but it pushes you to be better.

Kelly,
Yes, all students can get involved in the discussion. It's good to summarize their discussions or have students summarize the discussions as well. Thanks!
I enjoy online discussion. It allows for the quiet student to express themselves. However, sometimes new or added information is weak. I found some of the student all "agree" without enhancing the discussion. More prompting was required to get them engaged.
Rahn,
Ask students to introduce themselves on a discussion board and ask other students to find three people they have something in common with. You can ask them to include whatever want in the introductions. Many times this spurs more discussion about the content or their connections and makes them feel like a 'community of learners.' Just one suggestions.
My current concern is how to keep students engaged in any specific course. Each course I teach has a different audience. What is the best method to use in understanding my audience so the discussions keep students engaged in an online course?
Victoria,
Interaction and engagement are essential. The discussion topics and how the discussion is organized and handled can play a bit part in how much the students are engaged.
Thanks!
Agreed. The discussions are a great place to interact with learners and establish presence. Interaction needs to be consistent and facilitative. This is also a great place to demonstrate enthusiasm over the content and the learning experience in general.
I think the discussion topics need to also be well thought out so that learners are engaged and the topic itself is open-ended enough to invite a diversity of viewpoints and perspectives. It needs to also build in success by encouraging students to reflect and apply their own knowledge and experience.
Eryn,
Yes, and to model good discussion board posts. Keep engaging your students. Thanksnformyour input.
