Creating Exams

Creating exams requires careful and understanding of student needs. Revisions and testing of exams is necessary to make certain they are optimal for a given student population. Research done on the importance of increasing students' “motivation for comprehensive learning using automatically added contextual questions in electronic examinations” and the usefulness of carefully preparing examination data (Baumann & Perlitz, 2011, p. 351).

Denise,

I always encourage students to be proactive in their communication. This is important. I also ask them to refer to any rubric prior to completing the assignment. Therefore, they should understand the expectations.

I am always open with my students and want them to let me know if any questions seemed 'tricky' to them in an effort to improve. What other methods would you suggest?

Giselle,

Good point! Any time we can emphasize critical thinking, the better. Thanks to you both for adding to the conversation. Take care.

I agree, Heidi!!

I believe that it is important to assess the student's knowledge of the course's undertaking rather than measuring a small portion of it (ex. paper). By also adding contextual questions, it allows the student to apply his or her own critical thinking to the new course learnings in a manner that deepens his or her knowledge while applying those learnings to a real life scenario.

Jacqueline and Heidi,

Thanks for continuing the conversation. We also have to review the exam as a whole after the process to make sure it is measuring the objectives. If I have 1/2 of the students who miss a test question, I put it out for a discussion board post and we discuss the correct answer. Thanks for your input.

Good Post Heidi,
Creating an exam is very important for both the teacher and the student.

The teacher performs the relevant research in order to create the exam.

The student must study the materials in the class in order to do well on the exam.

Sometimes the test questions are incorrect and the teacher needs to be open to explaining the rationale of why the question was written and the research behind the answer. If incorrect the teacher needs to modify the question to reflect the correct answer.

Take care.

Thank you! Great EL 103 course!

Heidi,

Great! Thanks for the resources! We have to think carefully as we create tests and review course content. Thanks.
