Effective Classroom Scaffolds

Ensuring instructor presence is vital in ensuring an effective online classroom environment. Students have the tendency to think that Instructors are too BUSY to ask questions or get clarification on subject material, however we can change this by frequent announcement posts, indicating to students that we are available with our posted office hours or live classroom sessions hours. Along with various ways to reach us, by phone/email or even text messages.

I believe that establishing a consistent and frequent "presence" in the (virtual) classroom is key to have high student participation. I typically divide office hours into 2-3 times a week, for maybe 30-45 minutes; and often advertise the office hours throughout periodic announcements. Likewise, I login into the classroom daily, so my students know that I am available, and answering questions frequently. This equates to an on-ground 2-3 times a week schedule, plus office hours. Regards.

Daniel,

I use a FAQ discussion board and give minimal extra credit for those students who help others. It begins the relationship building process.

Tonia,

Yes, we have to make sure we are using all of those types of communication tools. Thanks!

Tonia, I am having such a hard time connecting with my freshman students online. I normally teach upperclassmen. The newbies are so nervous about contacting me whether its email or text or call. Even when I call them, they freak out. I am exaggerating of course, I connect with 95% of them but that 5% really get to me. besides, extra credit what ways can we promote contact?

Sarrah,

Can you provide any extra credit to encourage students to use the discussion board or other outlets? That may be helpful.

I could not agree more. However, I often find that students fail to reach out even when encouraged to do so over and over. I think that understanding why students fail to reach out to their instructors is also important.
