EFFECTIVE communication is the key for both the student and the instructor; when teaching online I try very hard to "teach" daily and communicate with every single student - they begin to feel more comfortable when they are having a difficult time and tend to reach out to the instructor and peers more. As the instructor I feel like I am current with the "tone" of how students are reacting to assignments, their struggles and their comprehension of the subject matter - I evaluate the situation and decide if I need to communicate with individuals or the entire class and then taken action.
Scott,
It's amazing that people forget they can "reach out and touch someone" over the phone in an online course. Use all the communication tools possible. Nice job.
Julynn,
I must agree. I just spent 2 hours on the phone with a student (about an hour ago) discussing her Term Project.
This also gave me an opportunity to get to know her better and discover where her weaknesses are so I could address them. You can only do this with good communication.
Thanks
Scott May
Donna,
As you have pointed out there are various ways to communicate with students. The key is frequent and consistent communication.
Thanks!
I think that providing office hours is is helpful for the student that requires a one on one approach. E-mail is also another good way to communicate with a student. As an adult online student and instructor, I understand how important communication is. It is vital to make the student feel that you are available.
Jim,
You are so right! Communication is the key and without it students will be confused, lost and not "happy campers."
Communication helps students understand the objectives/outcomes and helps them feel like they are not just a number, but a person.
Keep up the good communications.
Communication is one o the primary keys to being successful in teaching online. Its also what will make most students successful as well. Most students are older and have serious doubts as to doing well and scoring good grades. When they have ready communication with the instructor and many of the support staff, it can well ensure their success.
Megan,
You are right, communication can occur in a variety of ways and it is important. Keep it going!
I couldn't agree more about communication in the online classroom. Communication is key to keeping students engaged when there is no regular face to face contact. Communication can happen in a variety of ways including, e-mail, discussion boards, or office hours.
Julynn,
Your comments help others who are getting started as an online instructor. Thank you again for your input.
Holding your chats/office hours helps establish a relationship with the students. This is essential. Also, communication is improved through these venues.
Nice job.
