Individual or Education Agency
Should an instructor be allowed to create his or her own individual syllabus for an online course or be required to use a course syllabus builder created by grating institution agency?
In my opinion, I believe that I would prefer to use the course syllabus builder because it allows for fewer mistakes and has been edited and approved by the university's administration. This will allow the instructor to concentrate on facilitating and managing the course and its students.
Jake,
Thanks for your input. Template can help with connsistency. Some times instructors feel too constricted with templates as they are not easy to add information to, but as long as the templates can be "tweaked" that's helpful.
Consistency is key, however, and templates do help with that.
At the school where I teach, we are required to follow a template for several reasons:
* It reduces errors.
* It increases comprehension among the students, since they are familiar with the format and know where to look for specific information.
* It projects a professional and polished image to accreditors and auditors.
Richard,
A template would be nice. I have not had that luxury, but I do try to build my online courses in a consistent manner so students can find informaitn quickly.
Thanks.
Charles, I believe the ideal situation is a template provided by the institution that allows the instructor to add information specific to the course and to that instructor's classroom management style. This allows for the consistency of message and style approved by the institution, but still allows the instructor some level of autonomy in his or her class.
Charles,
There are various models for syllabus development. I have never been required to use a template, but I may have been required to put in certain language about academic dishonesty policies or ADA requirements or information pertaining to accreditation objectives. I believe it is important for instructors to develop some consistency in their syllabi so the students can adjust quickly.
Thanks.
