Other methods of communication
Email is obviously one of the most recognized forms of communication with a class but I tend to use other forms as well. One of my favorites is to use a VOIP service (Skype) to meet up with students whenever they need to have a discussion. I feel that the telephone (with most students) is a pretty uncomfortable situation and not many of them truly "want" to be on the phone. I am curious what other methods people use when contacting students. I have heard the idea of using text messaging but that seems odd to me.
Yolanda,
Thanks for sharing. I think more should adapt to the technology.
Thanks again.
We use text messaing quite a bit on my campus and it is effective. We are able to send out messages to multiple numbers at one time with a standard message. With our students I am not sure skype wold work and most would not want to use it especially for privacy reasons.
Leah,
I have tried Twitter and Facebook. Various students respond to various media. Thanks.
I have used Twitter as a way to quickly reach all students. Many students are on twitter already and are quick to "follow" their class. I do not use this as much for teaching but sending out quick announcements such as "your grades are posted" or " don't forget to post your discussion boards by tonight" as these often appear on smart phones etc it is an instant notification process!
Elizabeth,
Yes, it's good to engage students. Thanks for your input.
Dr. Tena B. Crews
I really like to create a Discussion Forum where students can help each other!!
Valerie,
Variety is good. You seem to be readily available. Thanks!
I use a variety of communication techniques because I have students of every age and every walk of life (and located across the globe). I'm sure a lot of us are in the same boat.
I keep a Skype account and let students know they can IM me there any time. If I'm not online, I'll get the message the next time I log on.
Google Chat is a nice feature with email - and it's easy to sync to your phone.
Google also offers free phone numbers through their Google Voice app. I use this phone number for student texts only. It's another way to connect and be available with the millennial generation.
Stanley,
Good question. We have to know their level of usin technology to implement it effectively.
Ron: What % of your students have or know how to use Skype?
Diana,
Any type of communication that enhances the relationship helps. Of course, professional relashionship. Thanks!
I find this post most helpful. I had never considered Skype communication but certainly see the benefit. It is much more personal and direct than email or text messaging.
Ron,
Good point. Other communication tools other than email provide for different types fo communcation. I use email, Adobe Connect (synchronous) as I can share my desktop and we can see/hear each other if we both have Web cams, discussion board, Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) spaces online, etc. Hope that helps.
