Scaffolding
I teach Accounting For Managers online and the effect of scaffolding cannot be underestimated in this subject matter. Grasping the basic concepts of debits and credits is very critical for students for them to move on to the next chapter. Scaffolding shows the importance of the foundation of the course. In accounting, as with technology, and medicine and a host of discipline etc. we would not expect a student to start their first course by performing advanced work. Learning the necessary skills such as beginning with terminology, helps provide a student with a foundation of information that they will need in order to advance in the industry. If scaffolding is not carefully considered and the courses arranged in the proper order a student will not have the necessary background to be successful.
Michael,
Thanks for emphasizing the importance of scaffolding. It does lead to deeper learning and success. Nice job.
I also believe the impact of scaffolding cannot be overstated, although I have no history with accounting courses.
When teaching upper-level English classes, I often identified that students who struggled were missing some important scaffolding. Somehow, many students manage to move through general education courses without truly learning how to engage in critical thinking while reading and writing. For this reason, I truly appreciate the opportunities to facilitate entry level writing courses. The ability to impact students' future potential for success is a great blessing.

Bob,
So great to see how you understand that scaffolding play such an important role in your students' learning. I like you "Motzart" analogy. Thanks for sharing.
I teach in electrical diagnostics and scaffolding plays an important part in the students learning in this class as well. they always want to just jump in the deep end even though they are unsure of basic terminology even. I try to tell them you can't play Motzart if you dont know what the purpose of the black keys are on the piano. The basics are so important but also easily overlooked by eager learners that want to be experts in one day.
Neer,
You provide an excellent example as how important scaffolding is. It is essential to student success.
Thanks.
