Scalfolding
I never heard this term used in education before. It makes sense students would build on what they have previously learned as they move forward. It is important the teacher has developed a program that makes it obvious to the student they are not learning something altogether new but taking their knowledge to the next step.
Su and Kelia,
Thanks for continuing the conversation. Thanks also for bringing up YouTube and creating your own channel.
Nice job.
Hello Kelia,
It certainly does make sense to have students build on prior knowledge. In fact, it is an essence of adult learning, and in my opinion, online learning as well. It creates a sense of community when students are able to relate to the course material, and what is being taught. Some scaffolding tools that I like to use is a basic outline of what students can expect to see that week. In addition, I like to use videos to illustrate and have students 'hear' the week's material. I am a big fan of YouTube, and use it to create one's own channel, so students can refer to it continuously throughout the course. It makes the instructor more familiar and relatable as well. In addition, students are able to use a familiar form of technology for learning. What scaffolding tools have you implemented in your online classroom?
Cheers

Julie Ann,
Awesome. Thanks for continuing to learn. It's definitely a huge part of teaching.
I really appreciate this terminology and look forward to utilizing its functions in my online teaching methods!
Grace and Kelia,
We continue to learn through these forums, courses and in all that we do. Adaptive learning does build on what the students know, but I think can also provide information to students in the way they need it. For example, video, reading, simulation, etc. Thanks!
Kelia I had not heard of this term prior to this course, it implies however a building upon prior knowledge - I believe that this is also what we see in Intelipath ( adaptive learning). Would you agree?
Patricia,
I think several in this course are new to the term scaffolding. It's all good. We learn as we go and you are right - it's about building upon one skill after another. Moving up the Bloom's Taxonomy levels is a good thing! Thanks!
Scalfolding is a new term for me too. I think it is similar to sequencing of courses, so that skill sets build on the work done previously, but I can see the value of applying it to individual topics as well.
It also seems to be derivative of Bloom's taxonomy where you build student competence by repeatedly visiting a topic but taking the student deeper (2 to 5 for example).
Broderick and Kelia,
You're right - we do have a learning curve and we just keep progressing as we continue to teach and learn. Thanks!
Kelia,
I never heard the term before. However, it is very important to take advantage of what student have previously learned in order to take them to the next level in the learning curve. I think in courses such as Accounting and Finance is easier since they are developed in a way of needing knowledge and practice in previous courses/experience to continue the following courses in their programs.
Donald,
Ah - showing those relationships is the key. You're right in that they must have some stake in what they are doing. Thanks!
I agree that this is critical, Dr. Crews. I teach history, and I often find that when students feel that what they are learning is applicable to them, they become more engaged. I try to show them relationships between what they are learning in class and what is going on in the world today and, if possible, how this affects them. I like to say that students don't learn in a vacuum. They must feel that they have some stake in what they are learning.

Suzanne,
We want the students to understand what they are working toward and why. Applying the content to the real world is essential. That's why we have to use real world examples, have students share experiences, etc. Thanks!
Kelia:
In my experience, whether a student is learning something new or taking their learning to the next level has never been of paramount importance. Just ensuring that the student is learning is what is important as there is always room for a new perspective, an application based on past experience or best practices and learning new concepts, terms and definitions. What do you think?
Suzanne
kelia,
Glad you are learning new terms and can see how they apply to the classroom (whether online or F2F) environment. Thanks.
