Engaging you online students

I would love to hear some of your techniques to engage your online students that have worked well for you.
Here is a template for a jeopardy game that I found was fun for "Live Chats!"

Linda,
In the Horizons Report this year, academic gaming is projected to move to the forefront of online instruction (replacing many text-based exercises) over the next 3 - 5 years. Keep up the good work.

That is a great idea! I have used jeopardy in my classroom to engage my students in vocabulary and it has worked quite well. It was fun and they were learning in a fun way.

Elizabeth,
Wholeheartedly agreed. One of my favorite people in the world once stated, "How do you know if someone needs encouragement?...He/she is breathing."

I find that praise and encouragement go a long way in helping to keep students engaged in the online classroom. Never underestimate the power of an encouraging word!

Hi Martha, I like the idea of creating study groups. I will have to work on that one with my faculty! Tina

Tina,

A similar feature is used within my classroom where students are able to access a lounge and introduce themselves to begin that rapport building process from the start of the class. I know that at the moment, trying to figure out a way to allow students to join peer study groups in the same manner may also help to engage students more.

Hi Esther, that sounds like an interesting application. Can you tell me a little bit more about how you are using embedded video to engage learners? Tina

The use of embedded video seems to work well engaging the students. It provides a multi-media
effect that holds attention. The engagement of all the senses is helpful

Hi Martha, we have been using a psychology lounge to begin to engage learners early in the course. We use it as a way to begin informal, casual conversations with learners about favorite books, vacation spots, or discuss the psychological aspects of a movie they just saw. This helps them develop a social relationship with the instructor and other peers, which helps them open up more in discussions. Tina
