What is the best way to get the students to interact in online classrooms?
Kerri,
Both of these strategies are good examples of providing catalysts for student's to engage. These are proven facilitator tactics. Nice job.
Their grades are dependent on the student's activity levels in the forums. I provide "nuggets" of information that are only given to the students that attend the online chats. Also I challenge them with questions to generate further discussion.
I think that requiring participation in the discussions helps students engage in the discussions. If discussion is voluntary they may not be as likely to participate.
I let my students know up front that it is much harder to succeed in my classes if you do not partipate. I explain the benefits of discussion and the exchange of ideas. In addition, it is a social experience too, in which the students get to know their classmates and instructor.
Hi Shelly, I think you need to set expectations for interactions in discussions. In my program, students are graded for their participation in discussions based on the degree to which they used critical thinking. They are also required to interact with at least two other learners per discussion. Tina
