I'd like to see consoles such as the Xbox 360 and its Connect interface used this way. Connect can see the position of the user and use this to animate an avitar in a virtual world where they interact with other avatars in real-time.

That is a great approach. All of the tools you mention provide a more humanizing environment and the ability to communicate in a more robust fashion with each student. Is this general trend of online instruction to move toward the scenario-based, interactive technologies. Each year more and more learning environments are incorporating these activities to enhance learning. Setting up chat sessions and facilitating phone conversations are great way for an online instructor to work with students in a variety of communication channels. Very good. Thanks.

I agree you can use a variety of interactive methods like Eluminate, Second Life, and other software platforms that are interaactive for students. You have to keep their interests up and keep their attention engaged in the class! I also chat with my students and offer my number to actually talk with m distance education learners.

Real-time (video and/or audio) seems to have a substantial postive boost to some students in an asynchronous class. Good approach.
