Grammar and Spelling in Feedback
I have heard many discussions regarding using proper grammar and spelling in feedback.
I am of the belief that they should be done properly and do take points off when spelling or grammar are incorrect, as I believe we are preparing our students for the work world where the written word should be properly used.
Are you of the belief that incorrect spelling &/or grammar should, or should not, be penalized in the online forums?
I look forward to your thoughts.

I also believe spelling and grammar are essentials to success ... no matter what the student is learning. Writing has become a lost art especially with today's technology.
If you provide students with the necessary tools to assist with their spelling and/or grammar issues, I think they should be held accountable for them.
I'm currently researching sites such as grammarcheck.com for students to use before submitting online works.
I believe that student deliverable should be of the same caliber regardless of venue. I definitely set forth the expectations for my students and they are aware that spelling and grammar as well as proper citations are always required.

Karen,
I believe everything you say in your post and that it is important to teach them skills that will be directly applicable to the real world. That said, I would say it depends on the course. I certainly expect reasonable grammar, complete thoughts, clear sentences. However, I do not grade down to the comma level. This would also depend on the course and assignments. For a business writing course, I might have different expectations than a computer programming course. There is no one right way to do things. If you feel it is vital to have perfect grammar in your assignments, then as long as you articulate WHY you have this policy and the importance of it then that is fine.
