Something To Learn
A good way to help other people think about a subject is to ask them a question about it. Being asked a good question can really help us put information together, evaluate our existing ideas and create new ideas.
Jennifer,
As you note here, the key is to use something the students are clearly interested in or have an opinion about. If you have students tie questions and responses to topics that they are interested in and relevant to them, they are much more likely to expand on their answer to the depth you are likely looking for in a response.

I also agree. One of the strategies I use for developing effective questions is to find a controversial current event from the industry and ask opinions on the topic. These seems to get them engaged. Does anyone else have any tips?

I agree with you Easton. Normally I asked an additional question to my students after they make the initial post. This way not only they expand on their research, but increase the knowledge of the topic we are working on.
I strongly believe instructors need to make students to think critically.
