I agree that organization is important for students. Also important are communication, motivation, self-starting, and positive attitudes to name a few. Sometimes students do not come in to online courses with good organization skills and it becomes necessary for us to help the students organize their learning.

Have you considered giving the students a simple road map to guide their organization? I have found that many students come to online learning with minimal time management and organization skills even though these skills are vital to student success. I have found at times that I need to provide a little more guidance to some students to help them improve their skills in organization and time management.

I like the structure that outlines modules, lessons, and assignments in a structure or road map. Students need to see the structure and how to progress through the class each week or module. I recommend students review the structure and develop a time management calendar where they can break down assignments and plan their time by module.
The structure should be intuitive to the student. I believe students should know how assignments link to topics within each module.

This sounds great. Can you describe the roadmap concept a little more? Anything we can do to help online learners organize and stay active in our courses the better chance they have of succeeding. I think we sometimes assume that the students are self starters, are motivated, and have good organization skills. However, that is not always the case and it is our job to educate them in those areas as well. Student success should be our ultimate goal.
