I totally agree. It allows to learn many individuals who are working full-time, have families and can not learn in the traditional university. It helps people to learn new skills, refresh some skills at their homes.

It is convenient for students. But I also think that they have a bigger choice of programs in an online environment. Students that may not do well in an onground environment may do well online. Janis

Online environments have brought education and training to individuals that in the past might not have had access to it for many reasons. The key as you note is to make sure they are set up well and focus on the students and building community can be a good start in the design process.
