Kimberly ,
Yes, it is for many students.

Dr. S. David Vaillancourt

I do an overall welcome and I also send out a personal email to each student....example below...

Hello to All------
My name is Kim Riley and I am excited to begin our online voyage together.

Born and raised---I have lived in Ohio my entire life. We may discuss the number of years later throughout our time together. I live in a tri-state area with the three states being Ohio, Kentucky, and West Virginia. If you ever want to look for me on the map look at the most southern tip of Ohio (South Point) that is exactly where I live.

A little bit about my family---I have a wonderful husband and fifteen year-old daughter and a six year old daughter. They all mean the world to me. I feel so wonderfully blessed with my family. We try to have fun and remember the important things in our daily lives. We always try not to sweat the small stuff. We all enjoy snow skiing, water skiing and swimming.

Background Info--I have a Bachelor Degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in management I also have a Master Degree in Business Administration. I have been a Certified Public Accountant for approximately 10 years with the State of Ohio.

Past work experience-- I worked for AlliedSignal/Honeywell for eight years in the Accounting department. My responsibilities included every aspect of accounting from production to payroll to accounts payable the list is endless.

I currently have my own CPA Firm and also CFE and the Director of the Applied Business Management Program at OhioUniversity in Ironton, Ohio. OU-Ironton is a branch campus with the main campus located in Athens, Ohio about 2 hours from Ironton. I love teaching….I like seeing the learning process in action. I take teaching very personal and try to teach from my heart.

I have been in the online teaching/student environment for approximately nine years. I used the online system as an instructor and a student at the same time for two years. It was quite an experience seeing both sides of the coin. Online teaching is the way of the future. I find it to be very exciting and empowering for the students. Good Luck to all and let’s get started!

It is vital to the success of the student to make them feel part of the online community

Traci,
I use the group email approach for the "intro email." Then I take opportunities to address students individually based on their individual "intro emails."
