I think that as long as the students understand that their classmates will be able to read this information and that the extent of their participation is voluntary, there should be no issue with confidentiality.

I would think that FERPA is applied in this situation as HIPPA would apply to patient confidentiality. It is always a good thing to protect student and personal information.

If a student shares information openly with other students FERPA does not seem to apply there. It would be different if the instructor took information from a student registration database, like a personal essay or other personal information, and then shared it with the class for everyone to see. You are also not sharing any grade or related information.
