Well stated. This is an excellent approach to the online classroom. There are others who put the individualized learning activities at the heart and the learning community activities as the enhancement. Nevertheless, I think your strategy/style is excellent.

The discussion forum is really at the heart of successful online learning. The ability for students to demonstrate their udnerstanding of the assigned reading and their ability to assimilate the information is also essential. The discussion forum allows students to learn from each others experience and their perspective, thus solidifying the learning process. The discussion forum provides an opportunity for the facilitator to ensure the course objectives are being met and that students are applying what they have learned in a controlled environment.
These can be effective if a minimum number of replies are specified for each forum
