Online participation

It is important to make sure that all students participate in online discussions. The job of the instructor is to reach out to students that are not comfortable in participating.

Gwendolyn,
This is excellent. One of the main objectives of these courses is to provide a place where professional educators can enhance their skills. Thank you for your comments.

Our job as instructors is to find ways to put our learners at ease enoughto participate in some way, shape, or form in forums. From this course I now have more options of encouragment for my learners

Breezy,
Questions are the foundation for inquiry learning. Providing your students have questions from you and opportunities to ask questions of each other and you creates a rich learning environment. Very nice, thank you so much.

I think that online participation is very important for the student to take place in. I do not think that the student should just logon and do the course work and then just wait until the next time to submit and assignment. As an instructor, I try and expressed the importance to my students to engage in chats and to ask questions. As an instructor, you will be surprised on how many students have the same questions but are scared to post the question. My motto is " know question is a dumb question unless it is not asked"

Quiana,
Catching a student doing something right and motivating them to continue doing their best is a challenge for all online instructors when the student does not seem to be participating. Many teachers find a large number of nonparticipating students won't respond when inquiries are made. When you see a student not participating what means do you use to "dive in and see why?" Thank you for your contribution.

Dr. S. David Vaillancourt

I agree when you see a student notparticipating you can dive in and see why. You can also help them by motivating them to do their best!

Q

Sabrina,
Teacher creativity and flexibility are two hallmarks of great teachers in the f2f or online classroom. "Meeting the students where they are" is a key strategy which can include their interests, academic abilities, etc. The human, social engagement is so very inmortant, as Vygotsky would emphasize. Nice job!

I currently teach on campus and online classes. I agree that reaching out to students who are not comfortable in participating can be a challenge. I usually try to engage the student who is having difficulty by finding ways that interest them specifically. With that being said, over a series of messaging, I tend to discover something that interest them only. Once I have figured out that nitch and want interests them, I can implement a way to keep them interested throughout the course. It takes some time initially however we as instructors must be creative and try every approach to reach our students.

Hi Gerry, can you share some of the strategies you use to encourage students to participate? Tina
