Synchronous Chats

One of the things covered in this module was having synchronous chats occur one on one. What if I am not afforded that luxury and it is required that I do class wide synchronous chats? Is there a way to make them more interactive and more personal?
Also, is there a way to encourage avoidant/dependent students to participate in the classroom discussions/chats? Is there some sort of "tangible" incentive that can be used?
Ideas are welcome!

I have had the experience teaching in a live synchronous chat at a university. My experience is with synchronous chats are unproductive and force students in a military way to conform to the classroom material right away with an answer. The one best way to have synchronous learning is to see if the students are making responses in the live chat synchronous communication of value verses if students are failing papers in the course, etc. This can be a great way to get a comparative analysis if the student is cheating in the online learning course. I am an advocate toward asynchronous learning for students get time to read, review, and digest the material then post a lengthy, intelligent response. In my opinion that is a better way to learn for students and for the instructor to give a quality response back to students in the course.

Hi Beth, I think you can make your synchronous chats more interact if you have access to adobe connect or some other type of web conferencing system. You can open the conversation up to discussions, use polls to get students opinions, etc. We give students points for participating. Tina
