Feedback

Feedback from an instructor is very important with online classes. I feel this makes the students know that you are avavilbe for them and that you are present.

Joan,

So how do you address that. Do they just check their grades online and that is how they tell? Do you use rubrics for work and provide very clear detailed feedback on asignments?

Herbert Brown III

I tried to give feedback as often as possible. I have had students ask for feedback when I have failed to give it. Some students want to know how they are doing and how to improve what they're doing wrong

Earline,
Good point about the need for instructor input and feedback. No matter the format instructor need to be responsive to students in terms of evaluations, discussions, and projects. By doing so the students will feel engaged throughout the course and won't be so prone to drifting away.

I do agree that feedback from the instructor is very important. I have never taught online, but I am considering it.However, I have have taken online classes. I personally became very frustrated with an accounting class where the instructor was not available to answer questions that I had.

Martin,
This seems to be an excellent structure for providing the feedback. Thank you for sharing your expertise.

One other aspect of providing helpful feedback is to make sure it is promptly given. I teach an online math course and I try to provide feedback on all assignments within a day or so of them being submitted. I generally divide each feedback attempt into two pieces: general comments for everyone to read and then comments specifically on their submission. General comments may include pointing out mistakes that happen frequently, a reminder of tutoring and other resources, and other items. Then the specific feedback contains detailed results of their submissions.

Nagalakshmi ,

I agree.

Feedback is an important aspect in online learning. I believe the feedback must be individualized, timely, clear, motivational and formative. It should contain the student’s strengths, weaknesses and areas for improvement. Sometimes I think mentioning specific comments regarding a point also helps. Overall, the feedback should be manageable.

Excellent recommendations. Well stated.

Hi.
One aspect we have to balance is the length and detail of the feedback.
I find concise but clear seems to work best.
It also must contain positive aspects as well as needed improvement areas.
We should also encourage any questions the student may have.
Be safe.

Rebecca,
Yes, these are two of the important aspects of timely and specific feedback. Very good. Thanks for your contribution.
