Current events
One way to engage students in discussion forums is to provide resources that tie the topic to current events, this way students have a more visual representation of the topic.
I still learning about online courses but definitely sound a way to motivate learner.
I do both. I find that when I provide resources, it can assit in getting a conversation moving, but asking students to provide examples as well engages them, illustrates their understanding, and forces them apply what they have learned. They feel proud when they contribute and are acknowledged. It really fuels a discussion!!
I completely agree with Karissa's comment! We actually teach for the same school and we are focused very much on "career" programs. I specifically work with the Medical Billing and Coding program and one of the key industry topics right now is ICD-10. I feel it's very important for me to keep my students informed as to what is happening in the industry so they are not surprised by anything.
I like to start my weekly discussion threads with some posts to additional information with some questions that provoke their thoughts on the topic. :)
Karissa,
Do you as the instructor provide these resources or are you asking your students to generate additional resources that back up their discussion posts? I can see a benefit in both parties doing this.
