Hello Dr. Ernst:

I would agree with that sentiment. It is one of focus in an accelerated program. Often, the workload for the students in a 5 1/2 week course is the same as an 11 week course.

Best,
Susan

In addition, some students like having to focus on fewer subjects, which is usually the opportunity in a shorter session.

Some students are better in an accelerated environment than 11 or 12 week session. I noticed some learners are more focused and disciplined in this setting because they realize there is no time to procrastinate.

Thanks for sharing your experiences Ashley. The short classes can be a great benefit for some students.

It depends on how many other classes they are taking. I know some students that would rather have a five week course because they only take one course at a time so they can really focus on the one content area.

I teach at a university where the students have 5 1/2 weeks to complete the course and this is for both entrylevel and for advanced students. I find that the student has to be motivated in order to do well in the course, but actually I am very surprised at what the student can learn and how they can retain the information. I teach a similar course at another university where the student has 11 weeks to complete the course and actually the students who are in the 5 1/2 week session actually have higher grades as compared to the 11 week session. It does take more time on my part as an instructor to ensure that I watch for students who may start to fall behind. Overall, I find that the students do very well, even the entry-level ones.

Students in the shorter classes have to be motivated, and have to be able to devote time to class. These classes are not for entry-level students or for students who have too many other demands on their time.
